The research I have completed while part of the Humic Acid Research Group has primarily focused on the effects of different gel drying techniques on the morphology of solid HA products. I found that replacement of the water in an aqueous HA gel with a solvent like acetonitrile followed by drying with supercritical CO2 gives high surface area, very low density solids. Supercritical drying of a gel leaves the original organic gel matrix. Solid aerogels are probably as close as we can get to the structures of HAs in Nature. The metal binding and adsorptive properties of these new solid HA forms are of special interest in our Group.

I am presently a graduate student in Geology at the University of New Hampshire.
